What should I check before buying a second-hand handpan?
Ask about the instrument’s maker, age, repairs, retuning and visible wear. Listen to each note on the actual instrument and compare its response across the layout. Check the shell, rim and any bottom notes, then confirm the case, care guidance and any after-sale terms. A catalogue photo alone cannot show the condition of a used instrument.
Is a handpan with more notes always the better choice?
More notes give you more musical options, but they also change the layout and how you reach across the instrument. Compare a simpler layout with an extended model by playing a short pattern on each. Choose the sound and comfortable reach that suit your music, rather than choosing by note count alone.
